2006 saw the hugely popular Red Bull World Series head to Perth for the first time and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Over 300,000 people crowded the banks of the Swann River to witness some spectacular flying from some of the worlds most skilled pilots. Hungarian Peter Besenyei upstaged his rivals with a sizzling first run, carving through the course over 2 seconds faster. Most eyes for weekend were on American Kirby Chambliss, who only needed a reasonable finish to take out the World Series. Chambliss finished third overall for the weekend, nearly 2.5 seconds behind Besenyei. Englishman Paul Bonhomme split the top two in the end of season standings, with a blistering second run of the course. His time if 1:19:71 while only one of two times under the 1:20 mark for the weekend, was still over a second slower than Besenyei’s earlier run. When there was no action in the air, the thousands of fans were treating to highlights of previous events banks as well as interviews from local celebritys such as Formula 1 driver Mark Webber, via big screens set up along the rivers southern foreshore. Earlier in the day, thousands packed into Langley Park on the river northern shore, to get up close and personal with the pilot’s and their aircraft. The inner city park played host to the events aircraft, allowing fans to get up close to the action and witness some spectacular take offs and landings. With the overwhelming success of this years event, we look forward to seeing an even bigger show from the Red Bull team in the coming years. - Click here for more images Race Results, Sunday November 19, 2006
